The devastating fire at Luton Airport car park terminal recently caused the partial collapse of a building that was completed only four years ago. This is a clear reminder why automatic fire sprinkler systems should be fitted in ALL multi-storey car parks.
Building Regulations do not currently require sprinklers to be installed in multi-storey car parks? However, this advice does not take account of the greater fire load of modern vehicles and therefore the increased risk.
- Modern cars are larger and contain more plastics than ever before – which means fires are larger and spread more quickly.
- Electric cars produce intense horizontal flames which can easily ignite adjacent vehicles – resulting in structural failure and building collapse. This makes it even more difficult and dangerous for firefighters to gain control of the fire.
